Ultrasonic Inspection in the Steel industry and in transportation
Steel production is one of the largest industrial segment for ultrasonic inspection.
In most of the cases the base material such as bars, rods, plates and castings are inspected in the manufacturing process already.
Furthermore the final products are inspected such as tubes, profiles, sheets etc.
Steel constructions are usually connected by welding processes and all welds need to be tested for flaws ultrasonically. Whether plates are used to manufacture pipes, ships, pressure vessels, for all such applications ultrasonic inspection is applied.

High quality and safety standards exist in this segment. On one hand it is important for the car manufacturer to minimize manufacturing cost. On the other hand quality and reliability is essential to keep the brand name up in the market place. Ultrasonic testing is therefore a key factor, at first to optimize the use of materials and automotive parts in the R/D process, then to monitor the manufactured parts and finally to inspect parts after usage and aging.
There are a number of applications for ultrasonic thickness measurement and flaw detection from checking the thickness of motor blocks, determining the graphic content through sound velocity measurement on grey cast iron, investigating the quality of spot welds and other welding and many more.
Rails and railway axles need to be inspected during the production process and in-service.
